MONDAY JUNE 24TH
Made some new art work. I’ve been working on simplifying my characters a bit, not over-rendering. This was fun and progress is being made. It’s hard to find the right balance between detail and looseness, playfulness.
TUESDAY JUNE 25TH
There’s a lot of hope involved in this making books for kids business.
Hope that someone, anyone will like your work enough to give it a like on social media. Hope that someday you’ll get the attention of an agent or two with a well-crafted query or a spiffy portfolio. Hope that the story you’ve sweated is good enough to grow up into a real book. Hope that you’ll earn out and get a royalty check or two. Hope that someone will love your books enough to allow you to make more, a bit more on your terms.
Hey! I’m Jacob Souva and I’m an author and illustrator of books for kids. This is my weekly newsletter, Drawing a Blank. It’s nice here. I hope you like it. Oh, 3/4 of the letters are free and 1/4 are for paid subscribers only. This is one of those. If you’d like to read some things from behind the paywall to get a sense of what’s what, here’s a good place to start. Or you could become a paid subscriber and get all the stuff!
As I sit here today, I have a day old coffee in a half filled mug on my desk, a book dummy, some final art work, and my agent’s excitement over moving forward. I won’t share too much of where we are or what’s next, but I am hopeful.
